Douglas Equipment has been immortalised in the latest Bond film. Three vehicles from the Cheltenham firm were used in Casino Royale.

At a special preview screening in London, workers were delighted to see a vehicle they built especially for the film, and one that the film company borrowed, were heavily featured.

Pinewood Studios approached Douglas, based in Arle, to see if it could modify its aircraft tugs to travel at 50mph for an action scene.

Managing director Lee Brewis agreed before he knew if it could be done because he was so keen to be involved.

The tow tractors normally travel at 10mph and weigh up to 60 tonnes.

They had to shed half the weight and add racing track engines to reach the required speed.

A team of six worked 18 hour days for six weeks to get the tractors ready. Some got to meet the cast.

The company carried out speed trials on a test track in Pershore.

Its latest hi-tech aeroplane carrier, designed for the new giant Airbus A380, was borrowed for a scene in the film where an impressive new plane is delivered.

Mr Brewis said when he saw his products on the big screen he was filled with pride.

He said: "I said yes to it all before we fully investigated it because it was a great opportunity for Douglas Equipment to have the name immortalised in Bond history.

"The movie is fantastic, it's a great step back to Bond being a realistic hero.

"For us one of the best scenes is when our tug is driving towards a tanker - they slide out of control and just miss each other.

"There's a great side-on shot with the Douglas logo," Mr Brewis said. I got a real sense of pride for my people who have worked on the project.

"It's fantastic to have something from a family-owned business in Cheltenham featured in a film like this."

The company sold the two modified vehicles to Dunsfold airport because they are no longer suitable for towing planes with so much of the weight removed.

Casino Royale will be released on November 17.
